Learning at Village & Valor
Rigorous teaching, explained in plain terms.
Here is what actually happens in our classrooms: how we teach reading and mathematics, how knowledge builds across subjects, and how we make sure every child is both supported and challenged.
- Explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension — because strong readers are built, not born.
- Rich read-alouds and classroom discussion that stretch children's thinking well beyond what they can yet read on their own.
- Daily writing, from labeling a science observation in kindergarten to crafting persuasive essays by fifth grade.
- Diverse authors and texts that introduce students to a wide world of ideas — including books where Black children and children of color are the heroes, scientists, and storytellers.

- A coherent progression of concepts, practice, and problem-solving, so each year's learning builds deliberately on the last.
- Students work with manipulatives, drawings, and equations — moving from what they can touch to what they can reason about.
- Accuracy matters, and so does explanation: students learn to show why a solution works, not just that it does.
- Carefully sequenced content that builds real knowledge of the world — plants, weather, ecosystems, geography, history, and civics.
- Knowledge first, then application: students observe, investigate, read primary sources, and carry out projects grounded in what they've learned.
- Local connections wherever possible, from Richmond's waterways to its archives.

- Visual art, music, and physical education are part of every child's week — not extras for after the 'real' work.
- Daily outdoor play, because bodies that move support minds that learn.
- Regular opportunities to perform and create for a real audience.

Cultural affirmation
Every child seen, every story honored
Accurate, age-appropriate study of Black history, local history, and diverse perspectives runs throughout the curriculum — in the books we read, the scientists we study, the art we make, and the Richmond stories we tell. Every child's name, identity, and family story are treated with respect, from the first day of kindergarten onward.
Support & challenge
High expectations, real support
Teachers check for understanding frequently, teach in small groups, and communicate with families promptly when a child needs more — or is ready to go further. Additional challenge is built into daily instruction. As a new school, we are still establishing specialized services, and we invite families to discuss their child's specific needs with our team before applying.
“Experiential projects don't replace strong academic instruction. They deepen it.”
A neighborhood history walk works because students first learned to read closely, ask good questions, and write clearly. The field experience is where the classroom learning proves itself.
